About the author

Taya is Pinnguaq’s Marketing and Communications Lead, also managing Pinnguaq’s day-to-day social media. She is a graduate of Durham College, where she received an advanced diploma in Music Business Management. Taya has previously worked with emerging artists and small businesses in helping them brand and develop an online presence. When she’s not online, she enjoys listening to music on vinyl and playing old school Mario Kart.

In the past few weeks, we have begun to stream regularly on Twitch and we’ll be doing so more frequently in the coming months. Our presence on Twitch.tv/pinnguaq is being led by Brandon Bunnie our 3D Artist and Alyssa Amell our Métis Digital Artist.

You can watch Brandon and Alyssa on Twitch.tv/pinnguaq at these times:

Brandon:
Wednesday @ 1 PM EST
Friday @ 1 PM EST

Alyssa:
Monday @ 2 PM EST
Friday @ 2 PM EST

Why do we do this? As Pinnguaq grows and matures, we’re fine-tuning our mission statement and defining our role. We’re excited to share updates around that soon but two of the major pieces of our mission are mentorship and advocacy. We hope Twitch can play a small role in that.

For those who don’t know, Twitch is a 4 billion dollar streaming platform where users from all around the world can login and watch, interact with, and support their favourite gamers and entertainers. Primarily used to share video game streams, Twitch has an estimated 2 million + streamers sharing their lives, experiences and games. It hosts 15 million daily active viewers.

Twitch offers us a chance to put underrepresented faces and voices on a platform where they normally aren’t heard and to normalize these faces and names as gamers, creators and nerds. As this venture grows you’ll be able to see people playing games, speaking languages other than English, talking about experiences related to their communities and showcasing some of the best games on the planet.

Part of our mission with this company has always been to show underrepresented kids that they have a place in this world, and this is a small part of that massive endeavour… I don’t know if it will work, but we’re going to give it a try!
